I am trying to setup my network. Since installing Vista I have been unable to setup a network that includes the machine running Vista.
There are 4 machines in the network. 3 desktops and 1 laptop. the laptop and 2 desktops run XP Home and can find each other on the network none of them can find the Vista machine nor can they be found by it.
My network equipment is as follows. Belkin F5D7633 modem Router 2 F5D7000 wireless cards and an intel card in the laptop. Prior to installing Vista this machine used a Belkin F5D7001 wireless card but now has to be hard wired into the router.
I have tried mapping the network but the only machine that shows up is the vista machine. I would appreciate any help as I am seriously considering going back to XP as it was so much easier to set up the network.
This is something that Microsoft are going to have to make easier as more and more people are starting to network their computers at home. Apart from this problem Vista runs fine and is stable and I do like it.
Thanks in advance

Network setup in Vista
Since installing Vista I have been trying unsuccessfully to connect to my home network. My network consists of 3 desktops and one laptop. 3 machines run XP Home all of these machines can be seen by each other but they cannot see or be seen by the machine running Vista.
My networking equipment is as follows Belkin F5D7633 wirless modem router 2x Belkin F5D7000 network cards laptop has built in wifi. The vista machine used to connect via a Belkin F5D7001 card but as this does not work in Vista it is now hard wired.
I have mapped the network but only the vista machine shows up. All computers that run XP can access each other adn the internet.
Is there a simple way of setting up a network using XP and Vista machines?
thank you in advance. -- Ghost
Offering no solution - however I have Vista/XP dual boot - Vista connects to the network (wired) (as does XP) and did so initially without running network setup wizard. Keep "hunting"

Hi, thanks for your response, I finally managed to get my network showing up on all machines. Even the one running Vista. Still can't run wireless on Vista though. Thanks again -- Ghost

If I my ask, how did you get it running? Can you XP machines see the Vista machine now?
We have a machine running vista that shows up on the network but no other machines can connect to it. Can you explain what you did to fix this?

Shena, In the Control Panel under "Network and Internet" click on "Share files and folders". Click the bottom radio button option in all three sections. Then click save. This will turn on Printer and File Sharing and allow full access to shared folders on Vista from all PCs on your home network. This will allow unprotected access to your Vista PC shares. If you still want a username and password to be required or limit certain file access choose the appropriate options. The username and password you used when you installed Vista will work.

Shena, I went into the system and changed the name of my computer to what it was prior to installing Vista. After doing that I made sure that my workgroup was changed from workgroup to the same name as my network ie HOME. I enabled file and printer sharing then ran the network setup wizard on the XP machines. After rebooting all machines all computers showed up on the network and all of them are accessible.
I hope that helped. -- Ghost

I seemed to have gotten it all to work, although i hadn't actually looked at the shares on my vista machine until now. I may have done this myself, clicking things and such, but does anyone else have the users folder shared by default on thier vista machine? It was alittle disconcerting to see that show up!

I had the button checked that allowed access only by those that had a password, but was never given the option to enter a password. My XP machine just said I did not have permission to access the Vista machine. When I checked the bottom button, (allow access to all), I was able to connect to my shares on the Vista machine, but I would like to have more control. How do I set it up to use a password and give the XP machine the opportunity to enter that password?
